Jun 2, 2023 · The hugest improvements to me about Altirra BASIC is that it is Atari BASIC compatible and has an IF/THEN/ELSE/ENDIF function added. The latter most likely lost out due to the 8K maximum, but boy, having that IF/THEN/ELSE would have been huge BITD. Edited June 3, 2023 by ACML
May 15, 2018 · You can use Atari Basic to match what you have in the book, or use Altirra Basic. You can set up a virtual 400 with 16K or 800 with 48K and a disk drive. You can expand the simulated hardware as your skills increase. You can use either a tape or disk. Depends if you want to learn DOS 2.5 right away or wait a bit. ---

Altirra, an 8-bit Atari computer emulator. I had access to a number of 8-bit computers in my childhood, but my most favorite was the Atari 800, a 1.79MHz 6502-based computer with color graphics and a disk drive, and which as the predecessor to the Amiga, another favorite of mine.
