Oct 25, 2021 · Minecraft: Java Edition is only available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is available on Windows 10 and 11, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile.
Though I'd have to say Bedrock is the best version to play with friends since it's the most easiest to join other players unlike Java if you're playing for the first time. If you are looking to play minigames in Minecraft more, I'd suggest Java.
- Mods. While both versions of Minecraft support mods—Bedrock calls them addons and has recently expanded them—Java has far more options. Importantly, Minecraft Java mods tend to be free, while Bedrock add-ons can be either free or paid downloads in the Minecraft Marketplace.
- Cost. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are sold together nowadays for a set price of $29.99. Unlike the old days, you’ll get both versions of Minecraft in one neat package and a unified launcher, so you can swap between them at will.
- Controls. Both versions support mouse and keyboard, but only one supports controllers. Despite releasing all the way back in 2010, Mojang hasn’t implemented controller support for Java Edition.
- Crossplay. One of the key selling points Microsoft loves to remind us about was that Minecraft is "better together," which is simply not true if you’ve ever played with your kids and watched helplessly as they TNT a structure you’ve spent hours building.
- Java: Customization is Through The Roof. There is something nice about the Minecraft Marketplace in Bedrock where theme packs come out all the time for players to try out skins and textures.
- Bedrock: Combat Is More Straight Forward. For hardcore fans of Minecraft, players will remember back when 1.9 came out how combat in the Java Edition changed forever.
- Java: Experiencing Mods Come Easier. Mods are always a major part of the Minecraft experience, with some mods looking to aesthetically enhance the game and some looking to add more content.
- Bedrock: A Smoother Experience Playing. While it is a game that moves as far away from hyperrealistic graphics as it can, Minecraft on Java edition still tends to have lag spike issues even with some of the best computers out there.
