A good book takes longer to learn from, but usually also gives at least an overview of what other features some individual thing has, like optional function parameters or less common language features (personally I went years before discovering Python's raise from syntax - by accident).
These days there is accession in text-based courses with embedded coding environments like educative.io or The Odin Project or The Daily Coding. While they are a good alternative to books that are too dense and poorly written, I still can't feel comfortable to learn programming by reading.
You are not going to become a programmer by only reading books, you need to sit down and write code. But you absolutely can and should read books. If course there are good online resources, classes, videos and tutorials these days, and it's worth it to find out which things work the best for you.

Let's take an example that I'm learning to code (I'm a beginner) and I want to write a program that will sum up two numbers. If I choose a book I can just go there and copy the code and paste it in my IDE and I'm not sure that I will get well what the code means.
