There are a lot of so-called “scary movies” that get by on just being kinda creepy, or kinda gross, or kinda full of jump scares. So a movie like Ari Aster’s Hereditary stands out. It’s genuinely creepy, it’s genuinely gross, its jump scares will make you actually jump. It’s a terrifically frightening motion picture on almost every level.

Toni Collette stars as Annie Graham, a woman whose mother has just died and left behind a vast assortment of deep psychological scars. Her family can’t even seem to muster the mental energy necessary to mourn this woman, whose mental illness took such a punishing toll on Annie, so Annie is forced to take her conflicted emotions elsewhere, to support groups, just to admit that she has them.

Gabriel Byrne plays Annie’s emotionally reserved husband, and Alex Wolff plays her typical, pot-smoking teenaged son. Together they all take care of the youngest, played by Millie Shapiro, who has troubled connecting with other kids, and who also has a tendency to cut the heads off of birds and use them as playthings, which is nothing if not a red flag.

Or at least, that’s true for a while. The only mark Hereditary seems to miss is towards the end, when all of this harrowing uncertainty builds and builds to a climax that gives the movie theater speakers one hell of a workout, but which also culminates in - perhaps - too many answers to the film’s big questions.

Especially when the explanations the film offers might be less frightening than the explanations you were kicking around in your own, rattled skull.

Hereditary is one of the scariest movies around, and a spectacular showcase for actors Toni Collette and Alex Wolff. The film’s subtle shocks and realistic drama combine to create a dreamlike atmosphere, drenched in psychological horror, which builds and builds to a climax that you won’t forget anytime soon… although you may end up wishing the film...
