- Hop. While Hop wasn't Illumination Entertainment's first film, they sure didn't learn any early lessons from the success of Despicable Me. Rather than stick to 100% animation, Hop opted for a hybrid of live-action and animation, plunking poor James Marsden down opposite a computer-generated Easter bunny, as voiced by Russell Brand.
- Despicable Me 3. The latest effort from Illumination is also among its greatest disappointments. It becomes quite clear while watching Despicable Me 3 that only the lowest common denominators from the series have been culled and distilled into a rather pointless and mindless 90 minutes.
- Minions. Ah, Minions. There is no real reason for this movie to exist other than as a remarkably successful cash-in on the studio's most successful original creation.
- The Secret Life of Pets. I had heard a lot of excitement over The Secret Life of Pets from friends, so imagine my disappointment when I discovered that it continued the mean streak kicked off by Minions.
All in all, Illumination is a disappointment for many reasons. I saw it rise while Pixar fell. Pixar could've been real original had Toy Story 2 never existed, but here comes reality, where Pixar is forced to make sequels as a result of what happened in 2004.
The movies aren't outright terrible, (except maybe The Lorax, but that might be more bad than terrible) but they also aren't very memorable or interesting. The animation is bland, the scripts are bland, the characters are bland.

- Despicable Me. 2010. After over a decade, the film that started it all remains Illumination's best animated movie. This is the film that introduced the world to iconic supervillain-turned-dad Gru, as well as his even more iconic minions.
- Minions: The Rise of Gru. 2022. The sequel to Minions shows their role in the origins of Gru's legendary villainy. The film is set in 1970s San Francisco, with a star-studded soundtrack produced by pop legend Jack Antonoff.
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie. 2023. Video game adaptations are new territory for Illumination, but The Super Mario Bros Movie was a perfect fit for the studio.
- The Secret Life of Pets. 2016. In 2016, Illumination tried to create two new franchises to expand their domination of the animation industry beyond the Despicable Me series: Sing and The Secret Life of Pets.
