- Mathematics is inherently different from other disciplines. While it is wildly creative, it is not art. While it can be used to model natural phenomena, it is not science. There are elements of both art and science in the field, but it isn’t a subset of either.

I believe that mathematics is an art form, not a science. One of the most famous arguments for this view is the mathematician Paul Lockhart's essay A Mathematician's Lament (which I highly recommend). Specifically, he argues that mathematics is the art of ideas.

Interestingly they define mathematics as the abstract science of number, quantity, and space, either as abstract concepts ( pure mathematics ), or as applied to other disciplines such as physics and engineering ( applied mathematics ).

Mathematics is certainly a science in the broad sense of "systematic and formulated knowledge", but most people use "science" to refer only to the natural sciences. Since mathematics provides the language in which the natural sciences aspire to describe and analyse the universe, there is a natural link between mathematics and the natural sciences.
"Mathematics is not a science. It is a language that is free of contradictions, used by all sciences." It seems to be that most non-mathematicians do not think math is a science, while most mathematicians do.
