You can self-study for most AP Exams
- First, you should know that you can self-study for most AP Exams—you don’t have to take the course beforehand, although we recommend you do. To arrange to take an AP Exam, you’ll have to contact a local high school that administers them.

If you are self-studying, you can ask your school if they have older versions of the Bio textbook or look for a pdf online (the info doesn't change that much with each edition). Use the resources available to you.
Although it is possible, self studying for AP Biology is much more difficult than others simply due to the immense number of topics you have to learn. Some of these topics are easy, and others are not. You must have a great deal of self discipline to commit to studying everyday.
I recommend reading Campbell Biology and taking notes on each chapter (with the exception of those on anatomy/physiology and biosystematics). It will definitely be a grind, but if you work hard enough, it's possible.
Biology: If you are in an honors biology class, you might consider self-studying for AP Biology because you will only need to supplement what you are learning in class with some additional competencies necessary for the exam. (See the College Board's AP Bio Course and Exam Description.)
