Improv classes are available everywhere around in a town like Los Angeles, where I live, and are common in most other large cities. They’re phenomenal resources for professionals of every type.
But without an experienced player guiding you in the right direction, you might end up veering too far from the basics of good improv. Better solution would be to invite your friends to take 101 with you again. Improv with friends cuts down the learning curve for some reason.

If you've seen Reno 911, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, or Parks and Recreation, chances are that you've seen some form of improv. The word improv is short for improvisation, which "is the art of responding in an immediate and unmediated way to the stimulus provided by one's environment" (http://scalar.usc.edu/anvc/music-of-the-hemispheres/what-is-impro...
I created the chart below to help me explain. Each column has traits that employers look for in employees, traits of happy people, and benefits of improvisation--because I believe they intersect. If you look at subsequent rows, the improv benefits listed seem to be very similar to the traits listed for happy people and for work. My point? Improvisa...
Great! Let's delve deeper. Yes, And. Just two simple words. Yes, And is the basis of improvisation. Have you ever heard someone that says "no" to everything? Think of the last customer service experience where something went wrong, and the person offered nothing to make it better. It was frustrating, as the communication stopped. "No" gets us "nowh...

Think of all the things that you want to say on a daily basis, but aren't able to. Improv is a safe space to be completely honest. Your only job is to tell the ...
By being whoever you would like to be, this also means that you can't mind how silly you probably look. Everyone is going to be looking silly at some point, and everyone is going to make mistakes. It is our job as your scene partner to justify those mistakes. For example, if we're using the elderly man obsessed with Britney Spears example, maybe I ...
It sounds so easy, doesn't it? Many of you can agree with me that it's not that easy. As functioning humans, we have a lot of daily information to store--our numerous work computer passwords, what time we have to pick the kids up from school, what food we are bringing to the party, etc. It can get overwhelming. The good thing is that improvisation ...

Most importantly, you have to have fun. You just have to. Life can be stressful, frustrating, and seemingly painful enough at times, so why not make fun of it? Make fun of that cantankerous drug store employee who couldn't seem to break a smile, your co-worker that wants to one-up everyone, or the doggie daycare owner who insists on treating the do...

- Confidence! I’ll admit that it’s pretty scary to walk into a room full of strangers as an adult and do strange improv exercises. However, the idea that I push when running warm-ups and games is that everybody is in the same boat.
- Fail easier! One of my favorite aspects of performing improv is that you get up there and do something and you know IMMEDIATELY whether or not it worked.
- Say Yes! The sort of cheesy philosophy of improv is the idea of “yes, and”. Not only are you saying, “Yes” but you’re also providing more information.
- Social benefits! Get ready to make a ton of friends you never thought you’d be friends with. Improv attracts all types of people and over the years I’ve collected friends who are doctors, radio personalities, marketing professionals, disc jockeys, graphic designers, Marines… basically, you’re going to meet people who enjoy grabbing a drink on a week night.
I struggle with anxiety and depression, and doing improv has made it easier to just live. Laughter is awesome. Creating things spontaneously with other people is the make-believe I think we're missing from childhood. Ive learned about myself taking both short form and long form classes. Ive been taking classes and performing for almost seven years.
May 3, 2016 · That is right, you don't have to want to be on SNL or write for the Daily Show to take an improv class. Other people in the class may be interested in that, but don't let other people’s aspirations scare you off. I especially hear this from people who are taking their first improv class later in life.
