Doesn't justify its price tag
- On its official website, the Atari VCS is championed as "blending the best of consoles and PCs," but in reality the system is nothing more than a watered-down combination of a console and a PC. It sets out to do some interesting things, but it doesn't do anything unique, and it doesn't do anything well. It definitely doesn't justify its price tag.

I'm sure Atari is in no position to price it any cheaper, but for everyday folks who aren't diehard Atari fans the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series S, and PS5 Digital are all a far better value. However, ignoring the price point, the VCS console is a great piece of hardware.

May 17, 2024 · My point:The Atari VCS is the perfect combo of where yesterday meets today. While both the unit, and the concept are fantastic, the shortcomings of the system are its marketing and (sometimes) resolving glitches.

There are two different versions of the Atari VCS: the Onyx and Black Walnut variants. Black Walnut has a splash of classic woodgrain across the front, an homage to the original system's 1980s aesthetic. Lots of electronics in the early 1980s had a panel of wood veneer, for some reason. It was a different time, but it's a nice retro touch here. I t...
The Atari VCS Vault contains a decent selection of Atari 2600 and 1980s arcade classics. Some of my favorite old Atari 2600 games are here, like Yars Revenge. Then there are some weird choices, like Basic Math. There are also a LOT of sports games. I don't even like playing sports games from 2 years ago, I definitely don't have any nostalgia for Bo...
If you have a bootable thumbdrive with an operating system on it, you can use the Atari VCS' PC Mode to turn the device into a tiny, functional PC. I don't have a copy of Windows laying around, but I am the annoying guy who uses Linux regularly, so I made a bootable Ubuntu thumbdrive and plugged it in. Once I restarted and booted back up from the t...
I Finally Got my Atari VCS! (Console Review) It's an underpowered x64 pc in a box. Quote from a VCS games developer (Facebook group Atari Museum): from my weeks of profiling, the VCS is surprisingly more powerful than I would've expected, given the specs.
With some upgrades, the VCS is excellent. The retail price is very high in some regions, and the controllers in the all in one bundle aren't worth it if they come at any extra expense. However, if you can upgrade the RAM to 16gb, add an internal SSD, and take the time to follow the appropriate guides to configure the BIOS, this thing is quick ...
