  4. The Ritual was full of this bullshit. It also managed to have great atmosphere and a solid story, not to mention the incredible creature. In my opinion, though, the movie goes from a 7-8/10 to a 4-5/10 because of the extremely annoying overuse of horrible, crappy, cheap jump scares.

    • The Blair Witch Project (1999) The Blair Witch Project is perhaps the best found-footage documentary to date. Not only was it one of the first most successful films of its kind, but the eeriness it unveiled is still relevant today.
    • The Witch (2015) The Witch came out in 2015 and terrified viewers with its approach to the slow-burn/gothic era while being paired with beautiful film shots.
    • The Evil Dead (1981) Throwing it back to the 1980s, a good cabin-in-the-woods horror movie list wouldn't be complete without The Evil Dead. This film paved the way for horror movies involving cabins, demons, and the woods for many years to come and has remained a beloved film ever since.
    • The Cabin In The Woods (2011) Speaking of cabins, if horror fans haven't sunk their teeth into this gem, they're missing out. The Cabin in the Woods plays into the stereotypes of a typical horror movie, complete with a cast that plays their parts perfectly.

Perhaps the clearest reason why The Ritual is the most underrated horrorof the decade was its lowkey release. Many horror movies usually have months, or even years, of marketing that help attract an audience to the movie. However, The Ritual did not have any such build-up. While some may argue that this was due to its release as a Netflix Original,...

While it is true that the Ritual did not receive as many viewers as, perhaps, it deserved, this does not necessarily mean it was underrated. In terms of critical success, The Ritual was fairly successful as it received 74% on Rotten Tomatoes but there is nothing to suggest that it was greater than this score. The film was scary in parts and had str...

While there are many horror movies released every year, there are very few goodones. Many horror movies rely on jump scares to deliver their thrills. However, the jump scare is the equivalent of a fast-food meal. A fast-food meal is a cheap and quick way to satisfy someone's hunger, much like how a jump scare is a cheap and easy way to get a scare ...

While the film is certainly well made, with strong cinematography and stellar cast performances, there are few scenes that can be considered iconic. The great horror movies all have a famous line or scene that elevates them into a different plane. The Exorcist has the exorcism, Friday the 13th has the boat scene, and Poltergeist has "They're here."...

While a jump scare may terrify a viewer for a split second, it does not continue to scare them throughout the movie and even after the final credits have rolled. This movie relies on crafting an atmosphere that will continue to unnerve the audience throughout the film, constantly making the viewer feel uneasy. In addition to the supernatural atmosp...

The film opens with several mysteries that keep the audience intrigued, perhaps the most interesting of which was the nature of the creature that was following them and the mysteries surrounding the cult in the forest. However, the more we learn about these mysteries the less intriguing the movie becomes. RELATED: 10 Hiking Horror Movies To Watch I...

Horror movies aren't exactly known for their deep characters. Most genre entries are built around the central goal of scaring the audience, which can lead to trade-offs in other areas, notably in the character department. However, The Ritual does not submit to these horror conventions. The characters are layered and have complex motivations, flaws,...

One of the main themes throughout The Ritual is the regret felt by Rafe Spall's character at his own inaction that led to his friend's death. It was this one choice to not act that leads to most of the tension and character conflict throughout the movie. While this is undoubtedly interesting, the quest for redemption is not entirely fulfilled. The ...

One of the best things about the movie is its choice of monster. Throughout the film, the gang is being followed by a creature that they - and the audience - never quite get a good look at. However, towards the end of the film, we are treated to a quick shot of the creature and it is certainly unique. The creature appears to be some kind of stag/go...

While the monster is certainly unique, The Ritual cannot be entirely described as such. The plot of the movie is similar in concept to that of Blair Witch, just without the found footage. In both movies, a group of characters slowly begin to mentally crack as they become more lost in the woods. The main difference between the two movies appears to ...

  5. Feb 11, 2018 · We break down 'The Ritual' ending with director David Bruckner, what to make of those final frames, and more about his scary new Netflix movie.

  6. Worth a watch. I really liked this movie. Yes, the ending could've been better, a lot better, but it was really psychologically thrilling and spooky, especially for a Netflix movie. I'm really impressed with Netflix's content lately. I see trends in the low star reviews that I want to address.
