Gitanjali. Gitanjali (Bengali: গীতাঞ্জলি, lit. ''Song offering'') is a collection of poems by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, for its English translation, Song Offerings, making him the first non-European and the first Asian & the only Indian to receive this honour.

The National Anthem of India is entitled ‘Jana Gana Mana’. The song was originally composed in Bengali by India’s first Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on December 11, 1911. The parent song, ‘Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata’ is a Brahmo hymn which has five verses and only the first verse has been adopted as National Anthem.

The word amar is a possession meaning "my" or "mine" and the word sonar is the adjectival form of the root word sona, meaning "gold". sonar literally means "made of gold" or "golden", but it is used as a term of endearment meaning "beloved", but in the song the words Sonar Bangla may be interpreted to express the preciousness of Bengal.
