Using the CoEQ, early predictors of weight loss were tested. Craving control was the most significant predictor of BMI slope. Furthermore, craving control was examined by responder and non-responders. By 8 weeks (the first time point tested) there was a significant difference in weight loss between the groups. This continued for 56 weeks.

Dieting's bad reputation for increasing food cravings is only partially true as the relationship between food restriction and craving is more complex. While short-term, selective food deprivation may indeed increase food cravings, long-term energy restriction seems to decrease food cravings, suggesting that food deprivation can also facilitate extinction of conditioned food craving responses.
