There is growing evidence for yoga's neurobiological effects in people with psychiatric disorders. Postulated mechanisms of action include: (a) modulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis; (b) enhancement of GABAergic neurotransmission; (c) autonomic modulation; and (d) neuroendocrinological effects.
Furthermore, the efficacy of yoga for a variety of disorders not previously examined has begun to be evaluated and the results are somewhat surprising. Just 10 years ago the idea of yoga as a treatment for conditions such as schizophrenia would have been considered questionable at best.
