Many red dirt acts got their start in bars surrounding Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, a city considered to be the center of red dirt music. The genre also extends to music made south of the Red River in Texas.

    • Steve Ripley. Steve Ripley could arguably speak about the history of Red Dirt music and its nomenclature better than anyone. You know him best for his work with The Tractors, but it was Ripley's band, Moses, that first defined Red Dirt country in 1972.
    • Jimmy LaFave. Like Ripley, LaFave wasn't born in Stillwater but moved there. He spent a good portion of his young life picking Bob Dylan, and consequentially Woody Guthrie, songs.
    • Bob Childers. Childers is universally respected as Red Dirt's first poet laureate. He was another transplant to Stillwater, writing, playing, and recording with LaFave and another Stillwater regular, Garth Brooks.
    • The Red Dirt Rangers. Both LaFave and Childers wrote songs that mentioned The Farm. The Farm was an unused piece of land in Stillwater where the local musicians would go to hang out and jam, bringing with them whatever musical background and tastes they had.
