The way I see it, it was about how even after going through all that hell, a black man has as much to fear from trigger happy white men (acting in the capacity of cops) as he does the living dead. The ending is a gut punch in the same way the cop car pulling up at the end of Get Out is.

I get the feeling that I would have been terrified of NotLD when it first came out. Just the very concept of the dead coming back to life had to be extremely novel at some point, and that alone would've kept me up for many nights. I feel like it's always worth pointing out that writer/director George Romero literally invented the modern zombie.
