Then I got a little older, and I tried Shiki. I think both anime are worth watching, especially Shiki. Shiki provides an incredibly interesting twist on the "Vampire" genre. It will satisfy any gore/vampire genre fan. HS of the Dead is a little more 'typical', but nonetheless, I really enjoyed it as a kid.

It accomplishes the remarkable task of making the viewer feel a sense of dread, suspense, and a looming sense of impending disaster. The plot doesn’t progress swiftly, it teases and reveals very little but enough to keep the viewer hooked.
Highschool of the Dead. add. In both animes everything was peaceful, until suddenly people start turning into monsters, zombies in High School of the Dead and vampires in Shiki. Both anime contains an atmosphere of horror and mystery. If you want an anime with blood and slaughter, both are recommended. report Recommended by biakudryavka.
It's more about the juxtaposition of the fun and games scenarios with psychological breakdown and life-after-death stakes. I do remember some pretty light-hearted and funny moments, but it has been a while since I last watched it.
