Manufacturers recommend replacing O2 sensors in pairs (both Upstream or both Downstream). An older, slower sensor can cause an imbalance in the engine management system, leading to poor fuel economy and possible damage to the catalytic converter.
Aug 24, 2010 · A. Only when it is necessary. Most late model vehicles do not have a recommended replacement interval for oxygen sensors, though some oxygen sensor manufacturers do say that replacing O2 sensors at high mileage is a good way to assure peak performance and fuel economy.
Apr 26, 2022 · Oxygen sensors are not among the maintenance items that need to be replaced regularly, such as oil and air filters, so they typically are replaced only when they fail.
Jul 7, 2009 · Since I haven't had the time to replace the sensor yet, I'm curious if O2 sensors should be treated like COPs during a tune-up: replace all. Hope this makes sense. I know with some of the mechanics here on the boards will have a good answer to this.
Jul 9, 2011 · This confirmed that at least one of my oxygen sensors was bad (bad mileage). Is it good practice to replace both at once, or only the bad one? I searched a little, but did not find a thread on which terminals of the diagnostic port to test their actual output.
Oct 26, 2017 · Once the emissions are out of the engine and the first/upstream cat determines how to control the engine, the only thing left for the second/downstream sensor to do is determine whether the cat did its job on the emissions.

Oct 23, 2024 · Oxygen sensors should only be replaced when it is necessary. Most late-model vehicles do not have a recommended replacement interval for oxygen sensors. Like other engine sensors, there’s no need to replace an oxygen sensor as long as it is working properly and accurately reading the oxygen content of the exhaust.
