- Open club face. The most common cause of a slice is an open club face. This open club face will give you contact that isn’t square and often feels like a “side swipe.”
- Thumbs too on-top of the grip. One of the more common misconceptions when it comes to a “weak” grip causing an open club face is golfers thinking their thumbs should go straight down the grip.
- Arms separating from body. One of the great stabilizers of a square club face is to keep your underarms relatively close to your body throughout your golf swing.
- Keeping lead arm straight too long. Width and tension in a golf swing can easily be confused. Having width can add power, but if width is misunderstood to mean lead arm stays straight, this can make it really difficult to allow the lead elbow to relax and fold on the forward swing.

- STRENGTHEN YOUR GRIP. From Robin: "Traditionally, a checkpoint to creating a neutral grip was to take your address, look down at your lead hand, and adjust the position so you could see two knuckles.
- CHANGE YOUR RELEASE. "If you're slicing, your clubface is open at impact," Symes says. "To fix this, I see a lot of players trying to close the clubface in the downswing.
- SET YOUR EYES FOR A DRAW. "With a stronger grip and a better release, your curve should be gone," Symes says. "But you might need help starting the ball on line, or to the other side of the target for a draw.
- FLIP YOUR SCRIPT. "What does every slicer do—take the club back inside the target line and then swing down on the outside," Symes says. "When you combine this swing path with a weak grip and a poor release, the result is a guaranteed slice.
Slicers try to save the swing at impact by jerking the club left or flipping the face closed. If you do your job at address and going back, you can give the ball a good, athletic rip.
