Dec 12, 2022 · From Powerwolf headlining a sold-out night at the legendary Roundhouse in London to Blind Guardian going back-to-basics on The God Machine, 2022 was a big year for power metal. The genre may not have figured much in the official Metal Hammer end of year list - which you can read in our brand new issue - but there were still plenty of albums that could soundtrack an epic day's adventuring.

They have a list of 317 power metal album releases for 2022 at the bottom of their article that I would assume includes all releases for the year. They somehow managed to exclude Alestorm for that list - therefore, in my opinion they are being a dick, as they chose to exclude the band from the overall list of releases.
They have been activating more in the recent years and now the album is almost done. Nothing sure or dates has been announced yet. HammerFall and Avantasia for the ones that I'm certain are releasing this year. Stratovarius I think should be 2022 as well. Blind Guardian of course and Hammerfall.

- Obsidious // Iconic [October 28, 2022 via Season of Mist Records] — Coming into 2022, I knew that Iconic was going to be released and I knew that Obsidious had been formed, but I did not really know what to expect from it.11 And it was maybe the element of surprise that has allowed me to fully embrace Iconic; which took a form that I did not expect.
- Wilderun // Epigone [January 18, 2022 via Century Media Records] — Another enormous, impressive progressive death metal album in the particular idiom of Wilderun, Epigone is ambitious, grand, and fearless.
- Disillusion // Ayam [November 4, 2022 via Prophecy Productions] — Disillusion’s Ayam is an album that does what the best Opeth ian progressive death metal bands have done since the early 2000s.9 Rather playing a kind of death metal that focuses on the technicality of the music, Ayam is an album that hits the listener right in the feels—what Peter Lindgren once described as “death metal with feeling.”

EP a few months ago—not exactly a shocker, as the band has only managed a couple demos, one other EP, and a scattering of singles in, um, 23 years of existence.
