Richfield, Minnesota's biggest city. Not. But it could have been, if the generous forefathers of Richfield had been a bit greedier about clinging to their territory.
The town of Richfield was born in 1862, named for the rich gold claim found at that part of Williams Creek by a miner named Bill Cunningham. Soon people came from all around and built several saloons, a jail, a courthouse, and the St. Patrick's Roman Catholic church.

Early Settlement and Growth. The area now known as Richfield was originally inhabited by native Dakota tribes before European settlers arrived. In the mid-1800s, the first settlers established farms and began cultivating the land. The city's name was inspired by its fertile soil, which was deemed "rich field."
Richfield was not a quiet town. The raw camp spawned troubles in the form of murder and other forms of violence. "Dutch" William Dietz prospected in what is now called Williams Creek in the Cariboo. In February of 1861, he was rewarded for his efforts.
