The movies got Dumbledore wrong in many ways -- he was either too sweet and weak, or too loud and lacking in warmth. But Gambon in movie 3 got the ratio right. He was a bit mad, clearly very clever and manipulative, goofy and absent-minded at times, and surprisingly stern when he needed to be.
