Feb 20, 2024 · Culturally relevant teaching is an educational practice that focuses on classroom instruction that embraces the culture, race, religion, gender identity, perspectives, and experiences of every child. This teaching pedagogy improves children's academic and personal success as individuals and as a collective group.
Researchers have provided several relevant working definitions within cultural therapy that are noted here. The first is culture itself, which in the currently discussed context broadly refers to a system of beliefs, perspectives, and values a group of a particular race/ethnicity or geographic region collectively share.
The members of one group may consider their own, shared cultural beliefs as self-evidently true, while members of other groups might consider the same beliefs as questionable, if not strange and arbitrary. Culturally relevant beliefs govern every conceivable aspect of social life: religious, political, economic, and domestic to mention only a few.
