There are many more. Others may recommend different recordings that are just as good as these picks of pre-war or traditional blues.

    • Albert Collins: Ice Pickin’ (Alligator, 1978) Born Albert Gene Drewery in Texas and nicknamed “The Ice Man,” Collins was a cousin of blues maven Lightnin’ Hopkins but was inspired to sing and take up the guitar after hearing a John Lee Hooker record.
    • Albert Collins, Robert Cray, and Johnny Copeland: Showdown! (Alligator, 1985) A feel-good collaboration between two Texas veteran guitar slingers and newcomer, Cray, Showdown!
    • Albert King: Born Under A Bad Sign (Stax, 1967) The Memphis-based Stax label was synonymous with earthy southern R&B but in 1967 it racked-up several blues hit singles thanks to Mississippi-born singer/guitarist Albert King.
    • Albert King: King Of The Blues Guitar (Atlantic, 1969) Affectionately nicknamed the “Velvet Bulldozer” due to his silky smooth voice and imposing physique (he stood 6’4” tall and reputedly weighed 250lbs), Albert King rose to fame in the second half of the 1960s with his Born Under A Bad Sign album.
    • Robert Johnson - The Centennial Collection. “At the moment, this is the best re-master of the whole catalogue. When it comes to acoustic blues that’s related to rock ’n’ roll – because there are so many strains – Johnson has to be the greatest.
    • Son House - Father Of The Delta Blues - The Complete 1965 Sessions. "It’s the classic sound of a National guitar used in a solo recording" “Son House probably made his greatest recordings in the '30s.
    • Muddy Waters - Sings Big Bill Broonzy/ Folk Singer. “The reason I’ve picked it is that, as an introduction to acoustic blues, you’ve got two albums in one here.
    • Blind Willie McTell – 1927-33 The Early Years. “There are so many compilations out there, but I would go for the early catalogue. Incredible 12-string player, played in all styles from deepdown blues to ragtime novelty.
