      • Choose a solid or monochromatic rug that is easy on the eyes. Keeping a small room clutter-free is key, and that includes the type of pattern you choose for your floor décor. If you’re unsure what works best for your space, you can never go wrong with solid or monochromatic rugs to make a room look bigger, preferably in a light, neutral hue.

The Better Homes & Gardens Arches Hi Lo Area Rugemerged as the overall best area rug in our lab testing. Not only did this rug score points for its soft and smooth texture, trendy pattern, and durable-feeling materials, but it’s also one of the more affordable options we tested, making it an excellent value. To find the best options for an area rug, we put 15 products to the test in our lab in Des Moines, Iowa. All of the rugs were opened and laid out to flattenfor two weeks before testing began. First, we examined each rug for thickness, texture, and softness of the pile (checking to see if there were any loose fibers or threads), how flat the rug lay...

Chris Loves Julia x Loloi Jules Oriental Area Rug

The Chris Loves Julia x Loloi Jules Oriental Area Rughas a soft, matte texture that isn’t quite as plush and comfortable to walk on as other options, but it did perform well in the brush and cleaning tests, and we thought it seemed very durable. However, we didn’t find its overall appearance to be as appealing as other area rugs we tested.

Project 62 Eyelash Woven Shag Rug

Although the Project 62 Eyelash Woven Shag Rughas a lovely plush texture and we thought it represented a good overall value. However, it lost some points in testing for its quality and durability, and it wasn’t the easiest rug to clean.

Rugs USA Dotted Diamond Trellis Nursery Area Rug

The Rugs USA Dotted Diamond Trellis Nursery Area Rughas a sweet, simple design that would indeed be perfect for a nursery or children’s room. It’s also one of the more affordable area rugs we tested. It earned a relatively low score in our tests for durability, however, and for this reason didn’t make our list of the best area rugs.

    Size and Shape

One of the trickiest decisions when choosing the best area rugfor your home is determining its size and shape. While most area rugs are offered in a rectangular shape, others may be round or have a geometric shape. You’ll want to consider the dimensions of your space, of course, as well as the overall aesthetic of the room (do you want the space to feel cozy, or would you prefer to let your hardwood floors show through,?). Also keep in mind that a bigger, thicker rug will provide better sound...

    Material

When choosing the area rug that's best for you, consider the material as well. Area rugs are offered in a variety of materials, including polypropylene, polyester, and wool. “When considering what material to choose for your space you'll need to consider how much you're willing to spend, the amount of foot traffic, and overall design,” Stephansays. Wool and silk rugs are beautiful materials, but they are also generally more expensive and delicate, meaning they’re not the best choices for area...

    Care

When in doubt, always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions, as you’ll want to make sure you’re cleaning your rug appropriately for the material. In general, though, most area rugs on this list can be routinely vacuumed, brushed with a carpet brush or carpet sweeper to remove pet hair, and beaten outside if it accumulates excess debris. Many manufacturers also recommend avoiding placing area rugs in direct sunlight, as this could contribute to color fading over time.

What type of area rug is best for hardwood floors?

If you have hardwood floors, consider wool, cotton, polyester/nylon, or jute and sisal rugs to preserve and absorb sound. “You'll want to consider the thickness and size to best protect the high-traffic areas,” Stephan says. “It's also best, especially if you're above neighbors, to add a rug padfor even more sound absorption.”

What kind of area rug is easiest to clean?

When it comes to area rugs, you’ll want an option that’s easy to maintain, especially if you have pets or small children. “Synthetic fiber rugs such as polyester, nylon, and polypropylene are the easiest to clean as the fibers aren't as absorptive,” says Stephan. She also recommends indoor/outdoor rugs for an easy-to-clean option but notes that they can feel a little less cozy. “Flatweaves made of cotton or synthetic fibers are also great, as they are easy to clean and less absorptive to stai...

What is the best size area rug for a living room?

The size of the area rug you choose depends on your space, furniture arrangement, traffic flow, and style, Stephan says. “If your space has a minimalist feel, a smaller rug will enhance that aesthetic,” she says. “For a cozier feel for a family or living room, having a rug that covers most of the flooring area and under the furniture will give a much softer feel.” You’ll also want to consider traffic flow, or where people walk: For example, do you want your flooring to be covered or uncovered...
