- General 1. House points. In the films, house points play a major role only in the Philosopher's Stone. In the other films, almost all mention of house points are omitted (except for two instances, one in Chamber of Secrets where Professor Sprout gives 10 points to Gryffindor, and the other in Prisoner of Azkaban, when Snape takes 5 points from Gryffindor).
- Philosopher's Stone 1. The Boy Who Lived. The film begins with Harry's arrival at Privet Drive. As a result, everything that precedes this point in the book is omitted in the film, which includes
- Chamber of Secrets 1. The Worst Birthday. The book begins in the morning of Harry's birthday. The film begins in the evening of the day the Masons' visit, omitting Dobby in the hedges and additional quarrels between Harry and the Dursleys.
- Prisoner of Azkaban 1. Owl Post. The film starts with Harry performing the 'Lumos Maxima' Spell, well aware of the Restrictions of Underage Wizards and did not receive any warnings; every time he does it, Uncle Vernon would come to see what was happening and Harry would hide under the covers.

- The Final Duel Between Harry and Voldemort. Here's a scene from the movies that completely misses the point its book counterpart was going for. In the book, the final duel between Harry and Voldemort takes place in the Great Hall, where everyone can see.
- Aging Up the Generation of Harry's Parents. Time to get a little controversial, but it has to be said. As fabulous as Alan Rickman was in the role of Severus Snape, and as hard as it would be now to imagine anyone else in the role, he was too old to play the character.
- Harry Wasn't the Only One Who Could Have Been The Chosen One. At the end of Order of the Phoenix, just after he's finished his Divination O.W.L., Harry witnesses Professor Trelawny going into a sort of trance where she delivers the famous prophecy in which Harry appears to be the only one who has the ability to destroy Voldemort.
- Giving Ron's Best Lines to Hermione or Cutting Them Out Completely. It's almost universally agreed upon that the Harry Potter films did Ron dirty. One of the most notable ways Ron got the short end of the stick was how most of his best lines were given to Hermione.
- James Potter’s Legacy. We’re not gonna lie, Harry’s father seems like a bit of a jerk – if we were to judge him by the character presented in the films, that is.
- Happy Deathday. In the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Nearly Headless Nick invites the children to his “death birthday” where Harry and his friends meet a string of ghosts.
- Dudley’s Goodbye. A scene with Dudley saying goodbye to Harry in the very last movie was deleted, though it is still available to watch on the internet and present in the book for all to enjoy.
- Voldemort’s Past. As great as they are, the Harry Potter movies have a tendency to omit the backstories of important characters or only mention them in part.
