Traditional models of cultural literacy. Hirsch (1980), a liberal philosopher of education, first challenged the idea of literacy as culturally neutral when he noted a decline in the quality of students’ writing.
Cultural literacy means being able to understand the traditions, regular activities and history of a group of people from a given culture. It also means being able to engage with these traditions, activities and history in cultural spaces like museums, galleries and performances.
I will suggest four major traditions or areas of enquiry that, despite inevitable overlaps, provide a heuristic by which we can begin to understand different approaches and their consequences. These four I term: Literacy and Learning; Cognitive Approaches to Literacy; Social Practice Approaches; Literacy as Text.
