- Earn your bachelor’s degree. To become a physical therapist, you must earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, so the first step to becoming a licensed physical therapist is to earn your bachelor’s degree.
- Choose a DPT program. After you’ve earned a bachelor’s degree or met the other requirements, you can apply for a Doctor of Physical Therapy program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
- Graduate from your DPT program and pass the NPTE. The purpose of the DPT program is to prepare PT students for the NPTE, or National Physical Therapy Examination.
- Pass your state's licensure exam. To practice in a state, you must pass a state licensure exam to receive your physical therapist license. You need to pass both the NPTE and a state exam to practice legally in many states.
- Earn your undergraduate degree. The first step in becoming a physiotherapist is to earn a four-year undergraduate degree. This is a prerequisite to obtaining a master’s degree, which is a requirement to work as a physiotherapist.
- Enrol in a physiotherapy school. A master’s degree in physiotherapy (MScPT) is the base requirement to practise as a physiotherapist in Canada. This is a two-year professional graduate degree program leading to entry to practise.
- Graduate from a PT school and pass the exit exam. The purpose of attending a PT school is to prepare PT students for the Physiotherapy Competency Exam, or PCE.
- Register with the regulatory body to earn your official license. After graduating and passing the PCE, you’re eligible to apply for registration with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) and the Colleges of Physiotherapy in the Canadian province in which you plan to work.
