- The British presidency in Calcutta was the Bengal Presidency, which was established in 1700 as a separate administrative unit accountable to London. Until 1774, its governors were given the additional title “of Fort William in Bengal.” It served as the capital of the presidency and the British-controlled territories in the region.

The Bengal Presidency emerged from trading posts established in the Bengal province during the reign of Emperor Jahangir in 1612. The East India Company (HEIC), a British monopoly with a Royal Charter, competed with other European companies to gain influence in Bengal.
