The centurion saw Jesus’ pain and suffering, he heard every word that Jesus spoke, and, when Jesus took His last breath, the centurion gave glory to God. Then, the centurion looked upon Jesus hanging lifeless on the cross and accurately summed up all that he had seen with the proclamation: “surely this was a righteous man.” (Luke 23:47)
This centurion was well aware of the strong condemnation of the Jewish religious leaders that had put Jesus on the cross for making the claim to be the Son of God. His commander-in-chief, Pontius Pilate, had upheld the conviction for Jesus’ making that claim.

He was a man of law, of order, of discipline, of duty, and from that standpoint of life he had watched the dying man until at last he said, "Truly this was a Son of God."
