- Bauhaus. Goth rock music started with Bauhaus, the English rock band featuring Daniel Ash, Peter Murphy, Kevin Haskins, and David J formed in Northampton 1978.
- Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Our next band, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, was formed in the wreckage of Cave and Mick Harvey’s former band, the Birthday Party, in Australia in 1983.
- Joy Division. Another famous goth rock band, Joy Division, formed in England in 1976. The members were Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and vocalist Ian Curtis.
- Siouxsie & The Banshees. British band Siouxsie and the Banshees were a highly influential goth band who’ve left a mark on many other genres, including alternative, shoe-gaze, and trip-hop.
- Drab Majesty – The Demonstration (2017) Most of this list revolves around classic bands who helped define the genre, but we’ll start with current cult faves Drab Majesty.

- Switchblade Symphony – The Three Calamities (1999) This list is dominated by bands who emerged in the ’80s, primarily because they set the blueprint for what would come after, and remain massively influential even now.
- Xmal Deutschland – Fetisch (1983) Germany has long been a stronghold of all things gothic. In Xmal Deutschland they had their own dark icons, but the band had to come to England first, playing shows in London and being championed by legendary DJ John Peel.
