It also continues the work of offering a version as free as possible from the gender bias inherent in the English language, which can obscure earlier oral and written renditions.
As a general principle, the ESV, similarly to the NASB, attempts to be a word-for-word translation. But I put this after the NASB because although that is a central value of the translation, the NASB is more comfortable with clunky passages than the ESV.
