  1. Nov 6, 2024 · Airports in Mexico City and Cancún have automated kiosk lanes where TOURISTS may register their entry to Mexico by scanning their passport on a machine. The machine will give you a receipt with a QR code that you must scan with your smartphone to get a digital version of your FMM. You’ll need to do this before you leave Mexico.

    • Temporary Resident Visa is intended for people who wish to reside in Mexico for more than 180 days but not longer than four years. The visa is approved for one year, and renewed for 1 to 3 years.
    • Once you have been approved for your Temporary Residence Visa you will present the sticker in your passport to Immigration upon arrival in Mexico; it is crucial they do not stamp your passport as a tourist with 180 days.
    • If you need to travel outside Mexico while your residency visa application is in process, it is important to apply for permission to leave Mexico at the INM office, or through an Immigration Specialist.
    • Once you have received your Temporary or Permanent Residence status, Never come back to Mexico as a tourist. If you return as a tourist, your Residence visa will be void.
  2. Once you have this permission letter, you may leave Mexico for up to 60 calendar days from the date the letter is issued, and it is valid for only one trip. Be sure Immigration stamps the letter as you exit and also when you return to Mexico, regardless of whether you arrive by air, land or sea.
