Toby/Harry remains on the run and some mysteries introduced in The Hawthorne Legacy, such as the meaning of a small metal disk Toby/Harry took from Avery, remain unsolved. Presumably, these loose ends will be tied up in the series’ final installment.

Tobias "Toby" Hawthorne II is the youngest child of Tobias Hawthorne and Alice O'Day Hawthorne. He is the brother of Skye and Zara. Toby is believed to have died during a fire twenty years ago.
Early Life
Toby was raised to be his father's heir. He was a fan of contraband as a teenager. Hidden in his armoire are many travel-sized liquor bottles. Under a loose floor panel in his bedroom is a small plastic bag full of pills and another one full of powder. At nineteen, Toby and three friends, Colin Wright, David Golding, and Kaylie Rooney, took a trip to a private island the Hawthorne family owns off the coast of Oregon. There was a horrible storm and a deadly fire at the house. The bodies of Colin, David, and Kaylie were recovered, but Toby's never was. He was declared dead.
The Inheritance Games
Avery Grambs learns about Toby's death, which occurred in August twenty years ago. Avery realizes that the homeless man she knows as Harry, is actually Toby. Avery and "Harry" played chess in the park starting after Avery's mom died. If she won, she got to buy him breakfast.
The Hawthorne Legacy
Avery and the Hawthorne brothers discover that Toby was actually adopted by Tobias and Alice. His birth mother is Mallory Laughlin, the mother of Rebecca and Emily. Mallory's parents made her give up her child because she was a teenager when she got pregnant. This makes Toby the half-brother of Emily and Rebecca Laughlin. The group learns that Toby learned about the adoption, and became furious at his father in particular. Wanting to "punish" Tobias, Toby wanted to burn down the vacation house in Oregon. So he doused it with gasoline, planning to watch it burn from a safe distance with his friends. However, lightening struck the house while they were still inside, and his friends died while he was severely injured and suffered from temporary amnesia. It is also revealed that Avery's mother, Hannah Rooney, nursed Toby back to health after the fire, and they fell in love. Toby tells Avery that while he is not her biological father, he cares for her as if she were his daughter. Toby was there the night Avery was born and helped pick her name. After Hannah's death, Avery supposedly met him for the first time when he introduced himself as a homeless man named Harry, and they often played chess together.
It is difficult to tell how old he is. He has a gravelly voice.
Skye says that their father ruined Toby because he spoiled him. He was clearly raised the same way as his nephews, on his father's games and puzzles.

Hannah nursed Toby back to life and they fell in love. In the Hawthorne Legacy Toby manages to find Avery, He had known Avery when they would play chess together after Hannah died. However he told her his name was Harry. Toby is the biological son of the Laughlins daughter and the biological brother of Rebecca and Emily Laughlin.

Dec 27, 2021 · The Rooney family are drug dealers near Hawthorne Island. Avery tries to reach out but they are having none of it. The police report from the night of the fire reveals that Toby soaked the house in petrol, but he didn’t set the fire. Instead, lightning struck, and the house went up in flames.
Toby had been angry with his father for lying to him about being adopted when he decided to get revenge on his father by burning down the house on Hawthorne Island. The police report showed that while Toby had soaked the house in accelerant and turned on the gas, no one had struck a match.
