Time travel can be confusing on the best of days. On the Netflix series Dark, it's a recipe for brain-bending gymnastics. Season 2 just made its Netflix debut, showing just how complicated the web of past, present, and future truly is in the quiet town of Winden.

If the finale left you a little dazed and confused, we're here to help. Here's a breakdown of the big revelations and what it all means heading into the third and final season of Dark.

The mythology of Dark revolves heavily around a concept known as "The Bootstrap Paradox." This paradox is embodied by key objects in the series like the time travel apparatus. H.G. Tannhaus technically built the apparatus, but he did so using the information given to him by an older Claudia Tiedemann. Later, Tannhaus relays that information to a younger Claudia, paving the way for her to one day teach him. That raises a critical question - who actually created the apparatus originally? This machine, like so many things in the series, is trapped in a perpetual loop with no true ending or beginning.

That paradox applies as much to the people living in Winden as objects like the time travel apparatus and Tannhaus' book. It also fuels what is perhaps the single most mind-bending twist of Season 2. The show establishes that Noah is the father of Charlotte Doppler, a twist revealed through a photograph showing Noah holding baby Charlotte. Later, we see Charlotte's daughter Elisabeth in 2052 recovering an old photograph of herself holding that same baby. Noah and Elisabeth are Charlotte's parents, meaning that Charlotte is the mother of her own mother. Weirder still, both women are grandmothers to themselves. That's just one extreme example of the complex and downright incestuous way so many Winden residents are connected.

No matter how much characters struggle to break this never-ending loop in the first two seasons, every action simply winds up perpetuating the cycle. Late in Season 2, Jonas travels back to 2019 on the day his father Michael commits suicide. Jonas believes that he can break the cycle by saving Michael and stopping the chain of events that follows h...

However, Jonas may still hold the key to finally breaking this cycle. One of the biggest revelations in Season 2 comes when Jonas realizes that the horribly scarred Adam is actually his older self. Adam manipulates his younger selves repeatedly over the course of the series, ensuring that young Jonas remains on the path to becoming Adam (even when ...

We'll have to wait for the third and final season of Dark to fully understand all the ramifications of Adam's machine. However, the finale makes it clear that the machine has significantly impacted the fabric of space and time in Winden. The younger Jonas is reunited with Martha, but not the Martha he knows. This black-clad Martha reveals herself to be from another world, hinting that Season 3 will explore the wider multiverse and introduce alternate realities where life in Winden is much different. Martha whisks Jonas away to another world, sparing him from death via nuclear annihilation.

Many of the show's major characters have uncertain fates leading into Season 3, as we don't know exactly how many of them survived the destruction of the nuclear reactor. A handful of them are shown to be safe inside the bunker as disaster strikes. Charlotte may have been pulled into the future by her daughter, as we last see them being reunited when a wormhole between 2020 and 2052 is opened inside the plant. But we don't know what becomes of Katharina, who was last seen navigating the cave tunnels and possibly making her way to her son Mikkel in 1986. And then there's the uncertainty caused by Hannah, who is shown taunting her imprisoned, time-displaced husband in 1953 and remaining in the past to start a new life for herself. Any of these characters could wind up either changing the time loop or perpetuating it.

The introduction of the multiverse seems destined to make this complex tapestry even more confusing in Season 3. As hard as it is to keep track of the intricate web linking these characters, now we have to start worrying about alternate realities, too. At this point, it's probably just as well the series only has one more season left.
