Jul 25, 2023 · Native to parts of China and Taiwan, this deciduous tree came to the United States in the late 1700s. While people initially favored the tree of heaven as “a unique, fast-growing ornamental shade tree,” the plant grew unpopular in the 1900s. Since then, it has become an invasive nuisance in many parts of the country.
Tree-of-heaven leaves range in length from one to four feet, with anywhere from 10 to 40 leaflets. This image shows the tree-of-heaven leaf next to a yardstick for perspective. The margins or edges of each leaflet are smooth, or what is referred to as entire. At the base of each leaflet you will find one or two bumps known as glandular teeth.
The bark of young trees is thin, smooth and brownish-green, becoming thicker, rougher, and light brown to grey in colour when mature. Tree-of-heaven flowers are small and pale yellow to green, growing on the tree in large clusters. Female trees produce clusters of : single seeds encased in a papery wing. The samaras are 1-2 inches long.
