Yes it is common. Similar concept as Stack and tilt swing. Usually it helps with consistency. I go with 50/50 unless I'm chipping or if I'm trying to hit it very low, and then I will occasionally go with 60/40, sometimes even 70/30 depending on the type of shot I'm trying to hit.
