Jun 17, 2024 · The use of wind instruments has been a long-held tradition in Irish music, and the majority of compositions are performed by either the fiddle or the flute and tin whistle. During the 19th century, most musicians favored the metal Boehm-system flute rather than the wooden simple system.
- The Bodhrán. The Bodhrán Drum has been around for centuries and is one of the most popular Irish percussion instruments. Measuring between 25 and 65cm diameter and played in an upright position, it is covered with animal skin (usually goatskin) on one side and on the other side the hand controls the pitch and timbre.

- Fiddle. You’ll be hard-pressed to find another instrument that is more indicative of Celtic music than the Fiddle. The fiddle is basically a violin. The body is the same, but a fiddle is often stringed with steel strings, while a violin uses nylon or gut strings.
- Celtic Harp. Any person who has had a glass of Guinness will be familiar with the Celtic Harp. - Tin Whistle. The Tin Whistle lies within the same family as the flute and is a staple to Celtic music. It is rather small and easy to carry, which perhaps led to its ability to remain so relevant.
- Pipes. The Pipes might be some people’s first thought when they think of Celtic folk music. Pipes can include both the bagpipes that are one of the most famous Scottish instruments of the highlands and then you also have the Uillean pipes which are from Ireland.
