Nov 25, 2011 · The French Catholic author Pierre Poiret coined the phrase “theology of the heart” in a 1690 work, La théologie du coeur, which enjoyed a wide circulation among German Protestants in the 18th century. Poiret drew upon a long history of Christian spirituality in formulating his notion of a theology of the heart, which is rooted in individual experience and nonrational modes of knowing.
