Sep 21, 2017 · In 2020, the EU had a positive trade balance with Canada of €13.3 billion in trade of goods and €3.7 billion in services. The EU is Canada's third largest trading partner after the United States and China, accounting for 8.2% of its trade in goods with the world in 2020.
Before the pandemic swept across the world in 2020, total merchandise trade between Canada and the EU reached a record high of €66.8 billion in 2019, equivalent to a 27.0% increase compared to the level in 2016, the year before CETA provisionally came into effect (Figure 1).
This report reviews the two partners’ trade performance three years after CETA provisionally came into effect. In particular, it compares trade performance in year 2016 (pre-CETA provisional application) with year 2019 (post-CETA provisional application and pre-COVID 19 pandemic).
General overview. CETA has helped increase EU goods exports to Canada by 26%. EU exports to Canada support 700,000 European jobs, 70,000 more than before CETA*. 44% more small- and medium-sized enterprises export to Canada now than they did before CETA. CETA has improved security of supply in raw materials, energy and food.
The EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is a progressive trade agreement between the EU and Canada. It entered into force provisionally in 2017, meaning that most of the agreement now applies. All national (and in some cases regional) parliaments in EU countries need to approve CETA before it can take full effect.
