Marine City was known as the town on the St. Clair River where the captains of lake freighters lived. Many of these men and their crews worked for the Pittsburgh Steamship Company. Formed in 1901 by US Steel Corporation , it became the largest commercial fleet on the Great Lakes.
Marine City was once a bustling hub of shipbuilding. Many wooden ships that sailed the Great Lakes were built here. The Algonac State Park has year-round camping with limited amenities and sites are first come, first served. Marine City Docks is a day-use dock and kayak launch on the Belle River.
History. Marine City is a charming Michigan town sitting at the confluence of the St. Clair and Belle rivers. Founded by the French and their "Ribbon farms," we are a border city just a short ride across the St. Clair river from Ontario, Canada. Our French heritage is still evident in the names of many people and places here.
Although never incorporated under the name, Marine City was platted as "Newport" in 1835 and it was known as "Newport" for 31 years. In 1865, it was incorporated as the Village of Marine City and was reincorporated as a city in 1887 after significant growth as a result of the booming lumber and commodity trade.
