Construction began in 1965 as a joint venture of Peter Kiewit Sons’ Co.; Raymond International, Inc.; Tidewater Construction Corp.; and Healy-Tibbitts Construction Co. Together, they were known as the Trans-Bay Constructors.
November of that year saw the first of 57 giant steel and concrete sections of the 3.8-mile transbay tube lowered to the bottom of the Bay by a small navy of construction barges and boats. The 3.2-mile bore through the hard rock of the Berkeley Hills was completed in February, 1967, after 466 work days, to become the fourth longest vehicular tunnel in the U.S.
