The Canadian Healthy School Standards define Healthy Schools and provide a framework for promoting health and wellbeing within school communities. They outline a set of interrelated actions that support successful implementation, presenting stories from across the country as practical examples.
The Healthy Schools approach is integrated school-based health promotion that incorporates health and health messaging into all aspects of school activities and engages the school community at large. There are five components: Curriculum, Teaching and Learning. School and Classroom Leadership. Student Engagement.
Healthy schools – also known as health-promoting schools – work with partners from the health and education sectors, and with those from the broader community, to support students to develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
A Healthy Schools approach builds on what is already happening in the classroom, and the goal is to integrate actions in all five components to support and inspire young people to realize their full potential as learners and grow to become healthy, productive members of society.
