Soil profile is the key for the soil classification and also forms the basis for the practical utility of soils. A hypothetical mineral soil profile will include O, A, B, C and R master horizons and all the possible sub-horizons. O horizon. It is called as organic horizon.
The soil is arranged in layers or horizons during its formation. These layers or horizons are known as the soil profile. It is the vertical section of the soil that is exposed by a soil pit. The layers of soil can easily be identified by the soil colour and size of soil particles. The different layers of soil are:

Apr 27, 2024 · The C horizon represents the soil parent material, either created in situ or transported into its present location. Beneath the C horizon lies bedrock. Basic Description. A. Mineral horizon formed at or near the soil surface. Ah. Accumulation of soil organic matter (SOM) Ae. Removal of clay, SOM, iron, or aluminum. B. Horizon formed by accumulation of material removed from Ae horizon or by alteration of the parent material.
Compared to other mineral horizons (E, B, or C) in the soil profile, they are rich in organic matter, giving them a darker color. The A horizon, over time, is also a zone of loss – clays and easily dissolved compounds being leached out – and A horizons are typically more coarse (less clay) compared to underlying horizons (with the exception of an E horizon).
