Nov 26, 2022 · A: An intake manifold is a series of interconnected tubes that distribute the air-fuel mixture to the cylinders. The design of the intake manifold is important for the performance of the engine. Q: What are the benefits of a performance intake manifold? A: A performance intake manifold can improve airflow and increase power.

In tests on a Chevy ZZ5 350 with GM Fast-Burn, Vortec-like heads, the ZZ5's as-equipped high-rise, dual-plane intake (PN 12366573) is stronger in the midrange than the GM single-plane intake, but makes about 15 hp less on top. GM's dual-plane intake is standard equipment on current Chevy SP 350/385 (350 cubic inches, 385 hp) crate engines. The trad...
GM's single-plane intake (PN 12496822) made more top-end power than GM's performance dual-plane intake on a 350 ZZ5-type crate engine but has less "area under the curve." This single-plane intake manifold is factory-installed on current 405-hp ZZ6 350 crate engines. On a single-plane intake manifold, all the engine's runners connect directly to a s...
Hood clearance allowing, and assuming the cam and valvesprings support higher rpm, carburetor spacer plates may extend the rpm range of both dual-plane and single-plane intake manifolds, adding a few horses. We've found there's no way to know in advance whether any spacer configuration (or what height spacer) helps or hurts, so you'll just have to ...
Like many of today's performance single-plane intakes, Weiand's Team G small-block Chevy single-plane intake features an air-gap cooling passage under the plenum that keeps the air/fuel charger cooler. Note the near equal-length, virtually straight runners on this version (PN 753) for a small-block Chevy—all typical of the breed. Photo: Steve Brule...
Those old Ford FE big-blocks can really benefit from a high-rise dual-plane aftermarket aluminum intake. Some of the old iron factory FE intakes aren't too bad in the flow department, but they sure are heavy. This is Edelbrock's Performer RPM FE dual-plane intake manifold (PN 7101), a leg up in both power and torque for those ancient Fords. Photo: ...
Although we've all seen and proven exceptions to these rules of thumb, in general when it comes to deciding between a single-plane vs. a dual-plane,mild carbureted street engines should use a modern high-rise dual-plane intake configuration, such as Edelbrock's Performer RPM or RPM Air-Gap (or other manufacturers' equivalents). For competition use wi...

Jun 28, 2024 · The intake manifold is the part of an engine that supplies fresh air to the cylinders. It works with the air intake, throttle body, air filter, and fuel delivery system to ensure the proper mixture of air and fuel is being burned by the engine. If your reusable air filter is clogged up with debris, it can mess up the air-fuel ratio.
Aug 1, 2021 · How the intake manifold works: The intake air flows through the air filter, intake boot (snorkel), then through the throttle body, into the intake manifold plenum, then through the runners and into the cylinders (see diagram). The throttle valve (body) controls the engine rpm by adjusting the amount of air flow.
Single plane intake manifolds are best used for: peak rpm performance where low speed/rpm use is limited or not important. creating an even air/fuel mixture to all cylinders to prevent a lean cylinder condition. raising the max rpm range of an engine, typically 500 to 1,000 rpm or more can be had.
May 23, 2016 · It is reasonable to expect that an aftermarket performance intake manifold actually can deliver a cost-effective amount of extra power. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. I have tested intake manifolds that gave really mediocre results. In the mid 1980s, I did a big intake manifold test for an article in Hot Rod magazine.
