- Pitcher timeouts, also known as “disengagements,” occur when the pitcher steps off the mound after already establishing their position on the rubber. Pitchers are only allowed to disengage twice during a single at-bat. If a pitcher disengages more than twice during a single at-bat, an automatic ball will be called by the umpire.
