  2. May 30, 2022 · The organizational structure of a church is the set of hierarchies, roles and relationships that govern how a church is run. The church is led by the pastor, who oversees all operations of the church and leads it in worship. The pastor reports to the elders, who are responsible for spiritual guidance and oversight.

    • Most decisions can be, and usually are, made by those leading that specific ministry. This is critical. Those doing the ministry are best qualified to make decisions regarding that ministry.
    • Staff/team leaders are allowed to build their own teams. If a leader can’t build their own team, but someone or some group builds it for them, you have a recipe for disaster.
    • Policies and procedures are kept to a minimum. I once read of a 33-page government document on how to buy a hammer. It’s much better to hire people you trust to buy hammers, and turn them loose.
    • Votes are rare. Some churches vote on everything from the color of the carpet to whether to add a new Sunday School class. The better structure is to vote on very few things, such as the annual budget or a new building, and let leaders lead.
