Lip of a dugout
- The lip of a dugout (i.e., the top of the dugout steps that is even with the playing surface, even if it is a different material than the playing surface) is considered outside the dugout for purposes of this rule.

Apr 1, 2020 · A fielder is considered to be in the dugout—and thereby unable to make a valid catch—when the fielder has one or both feet on the surface inside the dugout (for example, on the steps or on the floor of the dugout) or has dived into the dugout with neither foot on or above the playing surface.
A player is not permitted to step or go into a dugout to make a catch. A player is permitted to reach into a dugout to make a catch. If a player makes a catch outside the dugout and the player’s momentum carries him into the dugout, then the catch is allowed and the ball is dead. See Rule 5.09(a)(1) Comment.
Jan 15, 2024 · When a player catches a ball outside the dugout, momentum carrying him into the dugout doesn’t negate the catch. The ball remains live unless the player falls within the dugout. Railings around the dugout and photographers’ areas, including attached cameras or microphones, are considered in play.
