“Metrical dissonance” refers to the presence of two or more different ways of hearing the music’s metrical structure. This is usually divided into two types: Displacement dissonance sees two forms of the same meter displaced against each other, so with the same period and structure but a different phase.

Jan 7, 2019 · This article develops existing models of metric dissonance, most notably that of Harald Krebs, by formalizing them through the calculus of finite differences, thereby introducing a methodology for quantifying metric dissonance.

Oct 4, 2000 · For Krebs, a metrical state is the interaction of a pulse layer (the quickest pervasive attacks) with one or more interpretive layers that group those pulses into regular durations. Alignment of interpretive layers yields consonance; layers in conflict produce metrical dissonance of two types.
Dec 4, 2022 · Metrical dissonance is a situation where two pulse layers are in conflict: “A displacement dissonance is one in which two conflicting (non-aligned) pulse layers are moving at the same speed. . . A grouping dissonance is one in which two conflicting pulse layers are moving at different speeds” (54).
metric dissonance draw primarily from a conception of dissonance based on the relative complexities of frequency ratios while downplaying the important syntactical aspect that dissonance plays in tonal music. This article develops existing models of metric dissonance, most notably that of Harald
