Nov 28, 2021 · Bagua literally means "Eight Trigram" while Zhang means "Palm." Baguazhang originally was called Zhuan Zhang, which means “Turning Palms” because of the way practitioners move in a circle while turning their palms in various ways.
What is Baguazhang – Eight Trigram Palm? This art is unique in that it's practiced while walking on a circle. This is the main foundational exercise within the system and it is known as "Ding Shyr." We learn how to coordinate our circular movement with different "Palm Changes" as we change our direction on the circle.
Each of the eight animal systems contains eight striking methods, and each striking method has seven strikes, making a total of 448 unique strikes. In addition to the eight animal systems, Xie Peiqi's Yin style includes several "unorthodox" systems, such as the Penetrating Palm and Backhand systems.
