Mar 1, 2022 · The centrality of whenua for cultural wellbeing underpins the choice of Māori landholdings (within iwi rohe) as a determinant of wellbeing and health outcomes of iwi in our modelling work. The importance of te reo Māori, in turn, underpins its inclusion as a key cultural wellbeing outcome in the modelling.
Oct 6, 2019 · Maori methodologies and concepts promoting the primacy of whenua aim to develop deeper understandings of reconnecting people to place as conceptual and practical ways of promoting the wellbeing of both people and whenua. We argue this is a decolonising movement that all peoples can participate in, returning us to more mutually respectful and health promoting relationships with our planet.

The land becomes a medium for physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing through the whenua, te wao nui ā Tane (the forest), ngā wai ora (the water) and te rohe reporepo (wetlands) . For Māori, access to natural places for health, spiritual well-being and cultural connections is vital.
Through the intergenerational wellbeing outcomes and our engagement we have identified 17 actions that can be worked over-time to achieve Oranga Te Tauihu.These actions vary from addressing the inequity and inequality in health, developing an oceans economy strategy that creates value through sustainable harvesting and an Iwi led Te Reo Māori Strategy for Te Tauihu.
